Essay writing can feel overwhelming for kids and stressful for parents. With a simple four-step system, your child can write essays with clarity and confidence every time.
Before writing begins, your child needs time to brainstorm their ideas.
- Read the prompt carefully. Make sure they understand exactly what the teacher is asking.
- Brainstorm ideas. Encourage them to jot down every thought, example, or argument. The goal is to get ideas out of their head and onto paper.
Once ideas are on paper, it is time to organize them.
- Write a thesis statement. This single sentence expresses the main point of the essay.
- Outline the essay. Sort ideas into an introduction, two or three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Now the real writing begins.
- Start with a first draft. Remind your child that it does not need to be perfect. The goal is to follow the outline and get words on the page.
- Make adjustments. If an idea from their outline does not fit, it can be reworked or removed.
Encourage your child to edit their essay (ideally twice) before handing it in.
- Big edit (revise). Check if each paragraph connects back to the thesis and flows logically.
- Small edit (proofread). Correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Top Tip β Sometimes the hardest part of writing an essay for students is starting it. Encourage your child to leave the introduction until the end. Once the body is complete, it is much easier to go back and write an introduction that matches the essay.
Essay writing does not need to be overwhelming. When your child follows a repeatable system β Think, Plan, Write, Edit β they gain the structure they need to succeed.
